Overview

Sandakphu may not ring a bell for many travelers. But for the inveterate adventure seeker or the bona fide trekker, it is the ultimate destination. Tucked away in the eastern edge of India in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal is this tiny hamlet atop the eponymous peak, the highest peak in the state. So what makes Sandakphu trek so special? The climb to the highest point of this hill station situated at an altitude of 3,636 mt promises you a sight that will leave you gasping. The arduous sandakphu trek that takes three to four days to reach the point is well worth the never-before sight of Nature in all its glory.Located to the northwest of Darjeeling town, the trek to Sandakphu packs one memorable adventure. As the sunlight strikes Sandakphu, the white peaks of the Everest family in the West in Nepal, 160 km from where you stand, become awash in the red-gold hue of the sun. The Everest (20,029 ft) rises in all its glory above the valleys and ridges. You can also see the fifth-highest peak, Mt Makalu (27,825 ft), rising like a huge snow pyramid, along with Mt Chamlang (24,006 ft) and Mt Lhotse, the fourth-highest peak at 27,940 ft, further west towards Nepal behind the ranges of the Everest family. Look to your east beyond the great Kanchenjunga and you will see Narsing, Donkya, Chola and Chumalhari ranges that form the Tibetan frontier. The red glow of the sun adds a halo to the mountains that look like a crown of snow reaching up in the sky. Their beauty is indescribable. This 32 km adventure trail along the Singalila Range is actually considered a beginner’s trek, the best place for a first-time adventure tourist to begin. One of the most beautiful terrains for trekking, the best time for the Sandakphu trek experience is April May (spring) and October-December (post monsoon). But the stark beauty of snow-covered Sandakphu in the harsh winter months is also something to experience. Sandakphu trek have many trails so trekkers have options to customized the itinerary as per their need.

For the best view of four of the five highest peaks in the world and the adventure of a lifetime head to Sandakphu.

Trek to Highest Point of West Bengal

It's just a wonderful experience to visit West Bengal's highest point. The weather was really cloudy as it snows during February, but overall it was a mesmerizing experience to trek in the snow. The food and accommodation for the whole trek was excellent. Very much thankful to sangay and his team from off road adventure for making this trek success.

Random Trek to Sandakphu with off road adventure

we decided to do Himalayan trekking in a spur of the moment, on a Sunday afternoon. I randomly googled for the organizers and Off Road Adventure were the only guys to come back with answers. They suggested me to do the Sandakhphu trek as it was my first trek as well. And I am glad they did.I would recommend this trip to anyone who is looking for an adventure as the difficulty is easy to moderate. This lets you experience not only the rich flora and fauna of the region but also gives a glimpse of the lifestyle of the pahadi people. Finally, as we watched the Mountain Goddess Kanchenjunga shining in all its grandeur, at Sandakphu, we felt every bit of the effort is worth it.

Trek to the land of poisons plants

It was an amazing experience trekking with Off Road Adventure to reach the highest peak of Singalila Ridge. We started our journey from Manebhanjang and reached Chitirey , which I suppose the most difficult part of this trekking route. After Chitray trekking is much comfortable as the nature started to blossom. We visited Meghma(where you can play with the passing clouds),Tumling, Gairibas, Kalpokhri(a small black water lake), Bikebhanjung in the way to reach Sandakhphu(3636m). I was amazed by the beautiful panoramic view of Kanchenjunga. Sunrise is the most attractive of all. I was lucky enough to see the Everest also. If any one wants to see the Kanchenjunga must visit Sandakhphu.

Sandakphu 3 Day Trek

Overall, I would highly recommend Off Road Adventures and Sekhar (our guide). I went with 2 of my friends, and Off Road Adventures were able to accommodate our tight schedule by organizing a three day itinerary trekking through Singalila National Park and providing us with a personal guide. Sekhar was an incredible guide - he was extremely nice as well as knowledgeable about the area we were hiking through, since he's done expeditions there for so many years already. All three of us are from the US, and Sekhar's English was also really good, which was nice. This was truly an unforgettable experience and all three of us were thrilled that Sekhar was such a great guide and was able to show us 4 of the 5 highest peaks of the Himalayas. A little bit about our actual trek - Each day, we trekked an average of 11 miles (or ~18km) - the first two days were mostly flat or uphill, and the third day was almost all downhill. All three of us thought that the 3 day trek was the perfect amount of time, especially as the downhill part on the third day made our legs rather sore, and we weren't sure if we would have been able to complete a 4th day. We stayed in lodges up in the mountains during our two nights there, and I would recommend bringing some warm clothes, because although you don't need it that much for the actual hiking, it gets really cold the second night on top of the mountain (I went in late November), and there's no heat. We didn't shower for the duration of the trip, so bringing baby wipes could be helpful, and there weren't outlets to charge your phone, so I would recommend bringing a power bank as well.

Sandakphu Trek with Karma

An unparalleled experience. You see a whole different India from this Himalayan trek: mountainous views, trekking through and above the clouds, different cultures (hopping over the border to Nepal was a highlight!) and a sense of serenity that you can’t experience anywhere else. We couldn’t have done it without Karma. He looked after us at every step, getting us unlimited coffees and teas, motivating us and answering all of our many questions! At Sandakphu, the sunrise was very cloudy so he let us sleep but waited to watch the clouds and as they cleared 45 minutes later, he immediately woke us up so that we did not miss the views of four of the five highest peaks in the world - what we had trekked for! He was so patient and attentive, we couldn’t have had a better guide to take us for this once in a lifetime trek!

Sandakphu and Darjeeling Was perfect :-)

Im my third visit of darjeeling I thought it's basically just the HMI the rope car and perhaps the toy train and what else ... and then I met this guys. I was really stunned when I saw that they are arranging the mountain biking event and that was my dream to have a downhill ride with the most amazing stunning view both sides of the trail. It was my dream come true .. but that's not all .. actually you can ask what they do not do there .. Balloon paragliding .. kayaking .. rafting ... rope climbing training and yes off course they arrange custom trekking tour around the amazing places like sandakphu. Then I get the confidence to take my family with me in this Trekking Tour and with Off Road Adventure and it was amazing ... yes all stuff speaking English and I felt no short of anything that I can think of. Next time I will arrange another trekking trip with them and when we will get back to darjeeling I will try their paragliding, balloon and rope climbing stuff .. and in their website I see they are really cheap in a sense of the other countries .. especially cheaper then Nepal. Their website is http://offroadadventure.in/ and I have got all my queries and replies through their contact. One other thing I would like to mention that when I had my third trekking tour in sandakphu trek ... the guide that I had to took from the base Maney Vanyan .. he spoke understandable English and he even showing me things that I didn tasked and explaining things ( at least tried too ) ... and I asked him that I never had these from the other guides that I took from my previous trekking trip ... and he said This Guys yes the "Off Road Adventure" has arranged some workshop with them for free and trained them how to treat with foreign Trekkers and travellers and gave them English training as well ... and when I took the reserved car from Maney vanyan to darjeeling I was amazed that No More ear breaking annoying HIndi songs on the car anymore .. and later found that "Off Road Adventure" also arranged free training for driers to treat adjustment for the tourists .. amazing stuff ...

Our Trek to Sandakphu peak

I contacted Off road via email based on the excellent review here. And I was not disappointed at all. We booked ourselves for Sandakphu trek, Mountain biking and Rock climbing. Tsange(the proprietor) was very accommodating and replied to all our queries prior to our arrival. This made all our preparation easy. And our trek and other activities was made comfortable and fun by our guide Shekar. Our four day trek itinerary turned out to be extremely memorable and we would give a lot of credit to Shekar. He was very knowledgable, patient and talkative which made our overall journey very smooth. Next we even loved the way he conducted rock climbing and mountain biking for us as it was both challenging and fun. He even helped us write about the local culture which helped us understand Darjeeling and its people better. Overall we had a Fab experience with Off road adventure and would highly recommend it to anyone who want some adventure on their trip to Darjeeling.

Ain't no mountain high enough

We selected Off Road Adventure for our guided ascent of Sandakphu - the highest point in West Bengal - on the Singalila Trail. Unfortunately, due to changes in our travelling schedule and then illness, we had to move dates twice after our original booking. The ever-helpful Sangay was flexible, accommodated the changes and ensured everything ran smoothly. There are a lot of trekking operators in Darjeeling - we chose Off Road for their professionalism and credible-looking set. Both our guide, Robin and our porter, Subash spoke good English, were knowledgable and were great company over four days. The trek also took us through some stunning scenery and fascinating flora. It was energetic, but well within our capabilities as a couple in our fifties. If we have a couple of negative points, these are not about the trekking operator, or the route, but rather the accommodation offer on the mountain... it's all very basic, with no heating and very limited washing facilities. In time, some better equipped places may emerge - but for now, that's simply how it is, and we were very grateful for the full down alpine quality sleeping bags Off Road provided us with.

Excellent trek to sandakphu with off road

We had less time than the standard treks-3 days and 2 nights and Off Road arranged a custom itinerary for us to trek to sandakphu for the Everest view. Sangay, the main contact was very responsive-excellent English and communication. Other trekking firms we contacted in Darjeeling were not as flexible or responsive. The trek was fantastic. There was different terrains and routes each day so good variety and the overall 42km over the three days was strenuous but very manageable. Food stops along the way were clean and very tasty and had no problem catering for vegetarians. The overnights were a lodge and the main lodge at Sandakphu. At the time we went in November trek temperatures in the day were very pleasant but at night dropped to freezing so make sure to pack layers and a warm hat as the accommodation has no heating and no hot water. We were lucky to wake up on top to a very clear morning and see perfect views of Everest, Makalu, Lhotse and Kanchenjunga which were spectacular. Our guide was brilliant - would highly recommended him. He (Serkher) is the head guide and was very experienced and informed about everything, and spoke fluent English. He was very knowledgeable on the peaks and was a pleasure to chat to on all sorts of topics. All in all an excellent experience from start to finish with Off Road-if you are looking to trek from Darjeeling definitely check them out!

Sandakphu trek - Really authentic experience with Off Road Adventures

Had an amazing time on my trek. My guides spoke great English and knew every one of the families in the towns along our route. So they really helped to immerse me into the local culture, getting me to try tasty af traditional food and drinks, and teaching me so much about the local people and their history along the way. Even though the weather was far from ideal and very cold throughout my journey, the views of the landscape were incredible and I had so much fun hanging out with my guides. Would highly recommend doing this trek.
